Dear All,

I have started with the cleanup of the header file "settings.h". It was doing things it should not do, it was misused at several places,so time for action ;-) . The first part had little "compiling breaking" impact on windows, and have been solved. Unfortunately, I can't switch to linux for the moment.
if you encounter build problems on linux since this revision, please post them here, so I can investigate and solve them asap.
