watch variable +

OK I'm using code blocks for the first time my search found similar post but didn't answer the issue for me
background info
Ubuntu Linux 10.04
code::Blocks 8.02
gcc 4.4.1
language C++

when selecting Debug > debugging windows > watches

I get a blank box without handles to move it on top of the menu bar. I can't close it

what I want to do is see the current value of my variables as they change through each iteration of my loop
I also have not been able to get a breakpoint to stop execution at each iteration.

I'm sure I have just missed something simple here but?
