As an update, this only happens with gdb 5.2.
gdb 6.3 doesn't have this problem. My bad that I didn't ask you for your debugger version.

Ah, I shoulda mentioned that I'm running an ancient gdb and gcc.  I'm going to be upgrading next month anyway.
