Why IDE text editors are so ugly?

I'm using Visual Studio mainly, but I was thinking about this. Why there is usually only bold setting for fonts, why code editor text rendering could not have more advanced features like a drop shadow? Editing colors is also quite annoying in VS, and in Code::Blocks as well as far as I can remember. Everything is so simple and ugly. Why can't we have better looking editors for text.
