gdb under linux unusually slow

I'm running ubuntu 6.06 and have tried C::B with gdb-6.4-debian from ubuntu repos and self-compiled gdb6.3, in both cases it takes a few seconds for C::B to step into a function. usually, it lags with non-project functions, like stdio.h 's.
